Fifty Six LilyPads
Fifty Six LilyPads is a turn-based strategy game for Ludum Dare 56 (theme: Tiny Creatures). Challenge a friend or the AI: your frogs leap between lilypads to catch flies and lotuses, and each lilypad disappears once left behind. Score the most points before you run out of moves.
Fifty Six LilyPads
Theme and main idea
The game is inspired by a board game I have at home (Hey, That’s My Fish!). Instead of penguins on ice floes, tiny frogs hop from lilypad to lilypad in search of flies and lotuses. Once you leave a lilypad, it sinks, so the pond shrinks with every leap. You need to plan your jumps, trap your opponents and avoid trapping yourself.
Unlike the hexagonal board of the original, the lilypads form an organic graph (a Voronoi layout where each lilypad has at most four neighbours). Each game has a different layout, so no two rounds are the same.
How to play
- Placement phase: players take turns to put their frogs on lilypads that have only one fly.
- Playing phase: jump along connected lilypads in a straight path (highlighted on the board). The lilypad you leave sinks. Collect the flies and lotuses on the lilypads where you land.
- The game ends when no frog can move. The player with the most points wins.
The croaks are recorded by my daughters and me. And yes, I forgot the mute button.
Tools
